Beginning to End the Climate Crisis

On 3/23, at the Wayland Library, author Alexander Repenning and Wayland resident and scholar Sabine von Mering  shared their newly published book Beginning to End the Climate Crisis: A History of Our Future with Luisa Neubauer.

There is no planet B. Activists share how we must inform and organize ourselves to save the future. So how do you begin to end the climate crisis? Luisa Neubauer and Alexander Repenning begin by telling stories. Neubauer co-founded the youth climate activist group in Germany and has become its most prominent voice. In this book she and Alexander Repenning weave in personal accounts of their evolution as climate activists with a thorough analysis of how climate change impacts their generation, and what everyone of us can and must do about it. The young and old in the US and around the world can learn valuable lessons from their European counterparts.

Battery Storage for Homes & Businesses

On 2/28, Metrowest Climate Solutions hosted a webinar on onsite battery storage systems are seeing a spike in interest. Some homeowners are motivated by concerns about access to energy during power outages or brownouts, while others are looking to add battery storage to make the most of their solar system. These battery systems often provide backup for 10 to 20 hours and can be charged either by solar panels onsite or electricity from your utility.

Induction Cooking: May 18, 2022

If you cook with gas, you may not be aware of the drawbacks... and the alternative! Gas stoves likely make the air in your kitchen more polluted than recommended outdoor clean air quality standards. An Induction stove is not your usual electric stove, which can take longer than gas to heat food. An induction stove cooks food faster even than a gas stove, and temperature regulation is just as precise as on a gas stove. It uses magnetic waves which only heat the pan, not the surface of the stove, so it is never so hot that you can burn your hand on the stove, even when cooking. This also makes it more efficient than gas and electric stoves. Costs of induction burners and stoves vary widely. You can purchase a two-burner induction cooktop for about $125 and the price goes up from there. Andee Krasner (Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility and co-author with Rocky Mountain Institute of a report on gas stoves), will talk about the health risk of gas cooking. We'll also have testimonials of neigbors who use induction, and lots of time for Q&A.  A collaboration of Energize Wayland with Green Lincoln, Energize Lexington, Jewish Climate Action Network, Harvard Energize, and Green Newton.

Winter Sow Hands-on workshop: January 5, 2022

In this follow-up to our December 16th  Jump Start Your Seedlings webinar, Energize Wayland is excited to host Freddie Gillespie and Nikki Conzo of  Lady Fern Farm, as they lead this free hands-on workshop. Most Native New England plants have co-evolved with weather patterns that require a period of repeated freezing and thawing for their seeds to break dormancy and germinate. Using this simple method of planting in milk jugs that are then placed outside over the winter, even the most inexperienced gardener can grow a bounty of native plants for their gardens with extras to share with friends.

Jump Start your Seedlings: Winter Sow 1 (12/16/2022)

This free (online) event will explain the process of a winter sow, a terrific method for starting seeds earlier than you thought possible. Sow your seeds in a milk jug that becomes a mini greenhouse that allows the seeds to germinate several weeks ahead of direct sowing. The plants are sown in their mini greenhouse outside, eliminating the need to harden seedlings off.  You will also learn about the importance of pollination systems in our natural places. How to support declining species of native pollinators in your yard, in public spaces and on conservation lands. A winter sow is an economical and easy way of providing native plant seedlings for a native pollinator conservation garden.

Postcards from the Future (9/26 and 9/30 2021)

At this interactive, collaborative event, we played some games to explore our visions of the future, and what we need to do to make it a bright one. We'll take a time machine to Wayland in the future, from where we’ll write a postcard to our “past” selves ðŸ˜‰, reporting on what we see around us and what we did to address our concerns, to make it happen.
These will be facilitated by Waylanders and global climate change activists, Pablo Suarez and Janot Mendler de Suarez and the Wayland Climate Emergency Declaration petitioner Michael Delman.

Green Town Meeting Articles Workshop (4/29 and5/4/2021)

Get up to speed on no less than 3 Green Town Meeting Articles!

  1. Climate Emergency Declaration!
  2. Community Choice Electricity: This will enable the town to pursue a program to give residents and local businesses the choice to use an electricity  supply option with a greater percentage of renewable energy compared to the Eversource basic rate. Many of our neighboring towns have such programs: Sudbury, Lincoln, Natick, Newton, etc.
  3. Loker School Solar PV: This will enable the town to add solar to the new roof and explore parking lot solar canopies.

Get the Electricity of Your Choice (1/26/2021)

What’s the difference between putting solar panels on your roof, buying renewable energy through the Town’s your Town's electricity choice program or through other energy suppliers, and subscribing to a community solar project?  Can you combine these options?  What if you live in an apartment? Where can you get unbiased information? How do you compare competing offers? Wondering that yourself? Then this evening was for you! EnergizeWayland was pleased to co-host a conversation with Energize Framingham to help you sort out the possibilities.
